Fifty Shades of Grey Casting: Who Will Play Anastasia Steele?

The Fifty Shades of Grey movie hasn’t settled on its Christian Grey, and the same goes for the role of the billionaire BDSM enthusiast’s impressionable protegée, Anastasia Steele.

The following hot young actresses have either dodged, shot down, or otherwise addressed rumors that they’re being considered for the part. A couple of them have merely risen to the top in fan-generated dream-casting polls. Read on for a roundup of ladies willing — or not remotely willing (ahem, Selena Gomez) — to lose their innocence on the big screen.
Lucy Hale: Pretty Little LiarsLucy Hale is currently leading our dream-casting poll with 25% of the votes. “I’m definitely a huge fan of the books. Obviously I’d be thrilled to be a part of it, but I think it’s in the very beginning stages of it all,” the 23-year-old actress revealed in the September issue of Haute Muse.

Emma Watson: The Harry Potter and Perks of Being a Wallflower star hasn’t yet read the book, but she wouldn’t necessarily turn down the opportunity to join a new Hollywood franchise. “I mean, if there’s interesting character development and there’s an interesting story, then I would consider it,” she told The Sun. “But I haven’t been offered anything.”

Kristen Stewart: While the Twilight star hasn’t expressed any direct interest in the role of Ana, she has commented on the erotic bestseller. “[I]t’s just so raunchy!” she exclaimed in an interview with Backstage. “I mean, obviously, everyone knows that. But when I see people reading it on planes and stuff, I’m genuinely creeped out. Like, you’re basically just reading porn right now! Get that blanket off your lap!”

Selena Gomez: Selena filmed a Fifty Shades parody for Funny or Die, but that doesn’t mean she’d jump at the chance to tap into her sexy side for reals. “I know I’m taking risks but I don’t think I could do that,” she told MTV News. “That would be a little too much for me.”

Nina Dobrev: Nina Dobrev’s real-life boyfriend and Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder is a favorite for the role of Christian, and fans would be creepily psyched to see the couple take their love into the Red Room on the big screen.

However, Nina doesn’t think it’d be a great idea. “I think it’s best for any of the actors on The Vampire Diaries to kind of do their own things and create new characters,” Nina told MTV. Otherwise, “fans will […] see me as Elena and they’ll see him as Damon if we do a film together.”

Elizabeth Olsen: Despite being a rumored leading candidate for Ana, breakout indie star Elizabeth Olsen dismissed the casting buzz in an interview with Bullett, exclaiming, “No! No! No!”

Alexis Bledel: Mad Men Season 5 guest star and former Gilmore Girls heroine Alexis Bledel is one of several fan favorites for the role.

Katie Cassidy: The Arrow star’s response to getting her name in the mix for either Ana or Ana’s best friend Kate? “Yes please.” How polite!

Rumer Willis: Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s eldest daughter made it into the casting “Rumer” mill when she was photographed getting her PDA on with boyfriend Jayson Blair in Miami in early November.

Ashley Greene: Twilight star Ashley Greene has gained traction among fans of the books, but she’s likely a no go, considering author E. L. James is reportedly aiming to distance the Fifty Shades films from the tween vampire franchise.

Mila Kunis: Her name has been mentioned as a possibility, but would Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive bring enough innocence to the table?Keira Knightley: In a December 2012 Q&A with MTV, Keira shot down any possibility of her getting cast in the role — despite her prior experience filming S&M scenes for A Dangerous Method. “You know, I normally don't like to give a definite about anything, [but] I can definitely say it will not be Fifty Shades of Grey,” she said.

Felicity Jones: British actress Felicity Jones stars opposite Chris Hemsworth in a Fifty Shades of Grey YouTube fan video. When asked if she’d actually be up for the part, Felicity dished to Metro News, “It all depends on the filmmaker and script, just like any other job. Anyway, I’ve heard there’s lots of campaigns by fans pushing other brunette actresses, but I guess I should thank this person who went to all that trouble.”

Krysten Ritter: Don’t trust the buzz related to the b— in Apartment 23. On the topic of whether she’s really being considered for Ana, Krysten told Wetpaint Entertainment, “It’s just a rumor.” However, she was quick to add, “It’s flattering to even have my name mentioned. I love that my fans thought of me for it.”

Emilia Clarke: The 25-year-old Game of Thrones actress recently came out on top in a Latinos Post dreamcasting poll for the role of Ana.
